영국의 군가로, 전통을 고수하는 영국답게 그 역사가 오래되었다.
작사, 작곡의 경위는 모르지만 원래 있던 곡조를 바탕으로 18세기 무렵에 가사가 붙여졌으리라 예상한다.
척탄병은 근세 시절 전장의 전방에서 엄청난 무게의 폭탄을 던져야하는 사실상 자살에 가까운 병과였다.
따라서 척탄병은 정예 병과였으며 각국 마다 독특한 군복과 군장이 눈에 띄었다. ( 나폴레옹의 고참 근위대가 유명하다. )
흥미로운건 1절 가사 중에서 영국 척탄병들의 용기가 어떤 영웅들과 견줄 수 없다는 패기 넘치는 가사는 이 노래의 유명세에 한 몫 한듯하다.

이 곡이 삽입된 영화 '배리 린든(Barry Lyndon)'의 장면중 일부. 18세기의 7년 전쟁 시기가 배경인데, 이 영화에 쓰였던 이 음원이 유명한 편이다.
